The Wine

93 points & Gold Medal - 2016 World Value Wine Challenge

Golden yellow color. Fruity, savory aromas and flavors of grapefruit, white pepper, and straw with a bright, dry-yet-fruity light-to-medium body and a polished, compelling, spiced peach and fig custard finish with no oak. A smooth and even sauvignon blanc led blend with rich fruit and structure. -

87 points - John Szabo, Master Sommelier & WineAlign critic

Modest intensity aromatics, slightly green and nettly, with nicely weighted palate, fresh but slightly oily, with solid flavour intensity and good length. There's an attractive briny quality, almost like green olive tapenade mixed with light tropical fruit -passion fruit and guava. Well crafted, pleasant sipping wine, and excellent value as such. Tasted May 2016.

The Background

Located on rolling hills the rainfall is less than in the valley and the slope combined with the clay and limestone soil for drainage means that in normal years the vines roots are stressed rather than oversupplied with water. Still the soil composition retains some water which is a helpful water supply in the usually dry conditions in the summer since no irrigation is allowed.

It is a temperate oceanic climate with a prolonged growing season, thereby allowing vine growth to gain intensity and complexity.

When Julien who had studied agriculture joined his father in 2006, he easily convinced him that implementing organic and biodynamic practices in the vineyard were simply smart farming. A key benefit; they and their full-time assistant would not have to handle and spray toxic chemicals thus eliminating the potential long term health issues. And by using natural fertilizers and practices, their vineyards flourished. Just look at the vines of a neighboring vineyard, 5 metres from their vineyard…a somewhat startling if not a quite amazing difference.

Guy and Catherine Guisset bought their winemaking property in 1978 in Monestier on the land of an old Monastery dating back to the 12 century.

Their nearby vineyards are in the Bergerac Appellation in the southwestern hills, bordering Bordeaux,
almost literally a stone’s throw away.

Dave & Julien survey the vineyard growth in early May, 2016 when conditions were on-track for grape excellence which was challenged in July by Mother Nature’s oversupply of rain and undersupply of sunshine

Julien inspects the sad state of a vine in the neighboring vineyard…one might think its grapes are going to be lacking in robustness & flavourfulness

The Guisset’s hard-work and passion for producing excellent grapes pays off with a  Gold Medal at Concours General Paris in 2016.

REPARTEE Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon

60% Sauvignon Blanc/ 40%Semillon

The crisp acidity of Sauvignon Blanc grapes get a complexity boost from the low acidity Semillon grapes resulting in refreshing wine but with distinctive nose of peach and citrus and a palate with mineral notes.

* Disclosure - we love New World Sauvignon Blancs with their full tilt crispness and strong lemon/grass notes but our French Sauvignon Blanc is a bit more subtle and vous nous pardonnez, more elegant in the way French wines are

4 stars (out of 5) - Vic Haradine, winecurrent.com critic

“This white blend—60% Sauvignon Blanc/40% Semillon— is incredibly well priced and certified organic. It dishes up aromas of grassy notes mingling with honeysuckle and mineral notes on the nose of this fully textured, full-fruited gem. The palate’s bathed with a medium-full bodied flow of ripe tropical fruit and tangy blood orange, bold, balanced and beautiful. The finish lingers, crisp and mouth-watering good. “

Julien in the cellar which is: thermally regulated year round, comfortable to work in and hygienic…a good environment to bring out the best of their grapes character

Our winegrowers’ cutting edge Agriculture & Winemaking Practices bring out the best in our grapes

1. no irrigation insures true terroir character

2. teas made of plants & clay are sprayed to stimulate the vines natural defences &  repel harmful insects

3. no synthetic pesticides are used

4. good plants between rows attract bees & butterflies plus aid in keeping the soil fertile with good water retention

5. restricted cultivation of the soil limits evaporation of water in summer yet helps with the natural flow of air in the leaf canopy to reduce fungal diseases

6. lightweight tractors used to lessen compacting of the ground in order that the root system grows deeper & stronger

7. in the cellar, rainwater is collected & sewage water is re-treated & recycled

8. grapes are sorted in the vineyard & rushed to the tanks to avoid oxidation

9. the cool grape harvest is done during the coolest hours at night

10. cool grapes are stored in insulated tanks, thereby reducing the use of energy to cool down the grapes before fermentation starts
